Onchain Gaming and Blockchain Trilemma
From the humble beginnings of 8-bit classics to the high fidelity of current triple-A titles, games undergo cycles of transformation. Today, we're on the cusp of a paradigm shift that will redefine games and make them truly immersive for anyone.
The advent of blockchain technology offers decentralization and provenance to gaming, thereby giving sovereignty and value to the players - the very reason games exist. Gamers are no longer mere spectators, but active participants in shaping the games into a new concept of autonomous worlds (AW) onchain. Over the past year in our quest to build AW, we realized the biggest challenge in front of us was blockchain scalability.
While existing solutions have pioneered facets of onchain gaming, they eventually submit to the scalability trilemma.
Converging AI and Blockchain in Gaming
At the forefront of the next era of gaming, the convergence of onchain gaming and artificial intelligence (AI) emerges as a catalyst for revolutionizing the gaming industry. Imagine immersive worlds where non-player characters (NPCs) are imbued with intelligence and agency, capable of making independent decisions and shaping the narrative in unpredictable ways. Realistic simulation is finally immersive enough to nurture relationships with NPCs in “Today the Game” or create your never underwhelming best friend in “Palio”, reminiscent of our childhood fantasies of playing “The Sims.” The fusion of onchain AI opens limitless doors to emergent storytelling, dynamic gameplay, and a level of immersion that rivals realism. If bigger stakes and competition are preferred, one can test their resolve in the recently launched “Parallel Colony”’s never-ending generated survival simulation or “Overworld”‘s autonomous decision-making adventure game. The most popular and anticipated upcoming games use the terms “simulation” and “choices”, which are only technically possible through the implementation of AI and autonomous agents.
To this end, STP is launching Clique a Layer 3 on Base to pioneer the advancement of AI in gaming. Clique's extremely low transaction fees and data availability costs unlock a realm of AI enhanced possibilities, enabling complex onchain interactions, computations, and the introduction of autonomous onchain agents within gaming environments. Immutable game states and provable randomness further solidify the integrity and fairness of these virtual realms, fostering trust and transparency.
